JÁN MIŠUN (*1933 – †2020)
Ján Mišun was born in 1933 in Petržalka. He spent his childhood in Engerau and, during the occupation, in Hungary. He graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Bratislava and worked professionally as a graphic designer and creator of animated commercials for Czechoslovak Television. Motifs of Bratislava and Slovak nature recur frequently in his work. He primarily painted what he saw and strongly perceived in his surroundings. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
In his artistic language, he combined a sense of architecture, landscape, and fairy-tale motifs with the precision of an illustrator and graphic artist. His works are based on simplified forms, strong composition, and a color palette that serves not only to depict reality but, above all, to evoke a mood. He transformed urban nooks, towers, village houses, fields, and hills into rhythmic images with a subtly shifted perspective and a distinctive sense of silhouette.
In addition to lyrical views of the city and the countryside, his work also features a sense of playfulness, folkloric elements, and, at times, a subtly grotesque fairy-tale quality. His style combines the softness of painting with the discipline of graphic art, giving his works a poetic, legible, and visually cohesive feel.
A significant portion of Ján Mišun’s work has not yet been documented, as it remains stored in the archives of the television and perhaps companies for which he worked.
